  • University of Maine at Farmington Presents Winter Arts Week, Dec. 7-14
    FARMINGTON, ME (December 1, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington's Department of Visual and Performing Arts and the Ministry of Experimental Arts will present a series of arts events during their Winter Arts Week, Sunday, Dec. 7 through Sunday, Dec. 14. UMF Community Orchestra 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 7, UMF Nordica Auditorium This concert will feature two master works, the Beethoven Violin Concerto and the Dvorak Ninth Symphony, "The New World." Trond Saeverud will conduct the concert and also perform as soloist in the violin concerto. The concert is open to the public. Tickets are available at the door the night of the performance and are priced at $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and are free to UMF students with University I.D. Showings of Video/Music and Selected Shorts 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9, Room M220 UMF Merrill Hall This presentation will feature a video/music installation by Sean Chase and Matthew Hernandez, and "Selected Shorts from UMF Media Makers," a short program of highlights from recent accomplishments in video at UMF. These shorts range in content from mockumentary to moving studies of fear and release. This event is free and open to the public. Original Student Plays 8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9, UMF Nordica Auditorium Two new original UMF student plays will be presented immediately following the video showings. The first play "Well, There's a Train, There's Got to be a Murder," by Benjamin Gray is about an author who creates characters who turn out to have their own motives, a murderer who has a crush on the author's muse and an incompetent detective who is to solve the case. In the second play, "Exercises," Angela Hooper explores a complicated love affair gone awry. In the words of the author, there are "miscommunications, unrequited love, and an affection hidden beneath the sheets" in "a tale of two lovers who find themselves at a breaking point." This program is free and open to public, but due to mature content and language, it is not suitable for children. Original Student Musical Compositions 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10, UMF Nordica Auditorium A concert featuring new works of UMF student composers will include "Kaspar's Suite Day Dream" for flute, clarinet, bass trombone, violin, viola, cello, electric guitar, electric bass, and surround sound effects by Nathaniel Burns; "Dunce" for flute, clarinet, bass trombone, xylorimba, violin, viola and cello by Elliot Lyons; "For Tesla" for violin, cello and laptop by Seth Fogg; "Two Movements for Piano" by Joshua Case; and "Ex Unus Nota" by Andrew Thompson, also for solo piano. This concert is free and open to public. Jetfighter and Electro-Acoustic Music 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 11, Piazza-fourth floor conference room in UMF Merrill Hall Jetfighter, an experimental rock group and electro-acoustic musicians Patrick Howell and Vincent Leonetti will perform with Joanna Wilbur on tap dance/music. This event is free and open to public. Sole Expression and Electro-Acoustic Music 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 11, UMF Nordica Auditorium A musical program featuring a capella group Sole Expression and electro-acoustic and improvisatory performances by Ashlee Page, Andrew Bellmore and David Kerchner. This program is free and open to public. UMF Community Chorus 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13 and 3 p.m., Sunday Dec. 14, Farmington's Old South Church Two performances will be featured by the UMF Community Chorus, conducted by Bruce McInnes. These performances will include Vivaldi's "Gloria" and Marc Antoine Charpentier's "Messe de Minuit pour No?l." This concert is open to the public. Tickets are available at the door the night of the performance and are priced at $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and are free to UMF students with University I.D. UMF Student Art Exhibit 12-4 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9 through Sunday, Dec. 14, UMF Art Gallery Throughout the week, the UMF Art Gallery will host a student exhibit by members of Katrazyna Randall's Contemporary Theory and Practice class. Curated by Kristen Bisson, the show includes works by Emily Baer, Timothy Berry, Kristen Bisson, Joshua Demello, Meagaan Irish, Logan Leland, William Mosenfelder, Giselle Scherle, Matthew St. John, Elliott Vogel and Joanna Wilbur. Additional student art will also be exhibited throughout Merrill Hall, curated by Sarah Levensalor.   • University of Maine at Farmington Students Named Fall 2008 Michael D. Wilson Research Scholars and Fellows
    FARMINGTON, ME (November 24, 2008)--Among the many UMF students conducting undergraduate research projects this semester, 11 have recently been recognized by the University of Maine at Farmington Undergraduate Research Council as fall 2008 Michael D. Wilson Research Scholars and Fellows. Under the Wilson program, each student's original research project is awarded funding that underwrites expenses and helps encourage and promote continuing academic investigation. These awards are funded by a generous gift from Michael and Susan Angelides, Stonington, Conn., in honor of their good friend and UMF alumnus Michael D. Wilson, class of 1976, who died shortly after graduating. (more)

  • University of Maine at Farmington's UMF Dancers to Perform 2008 Winter Concert, November 11
    FARMINGTON, ME (November 4, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington's UMF Dancers will perform their 2008 Winter Concert at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 11, in Nordica Auditorium in UMF's Merrill Hall.   • University of Maine at Farmington Director of Dining Services Christopher Kinney Honored with Jefferson Award
    FARMINGTON, ME (October 16, 2008)--Christopher Kinney, director of Aramark Dining Services at University of Maine at Farmington, recently was honored with a prestigious Jefferson Award from the American Institute for Public Service. Kinney received this national distinction for his contributions through community service as a part of the "Aramark Building Community" event held at Fenway Park in Boston. "We congratulate Chris on this remarkable honor," said Theodora J. Kalikow, president of UMF.   • University of Maine at Farmington Announces Dean's List for Spring 2008 Semester
    FARMINGTON, ME (July 29, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington has announced its Dean's List for the Spring 2008 semester. UMF maintains a Dean's List each semester for those students completing a minimum of 12 credits in courses producing quality points. A student whose grade point average equals or exceeds 3.8 will be listed with high academic achievement. A student whose grade point average for the semester is less than 3.8 but equal to or greater than 3.5 will be listed with academic achievement. Any incompletes must be satisfactorily completed before the student is honored with Dean's List status. Academic achievement awarded at commencement is based on all course work taken at UMF. (more)
  • University of Maine at Farmington Faculty Member Chris Brinegar Awarded Prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to Teach in Nepal
    FARMINGTON, ME (July 15, 2008)--Chris Brinegar, a faculty member affiliated with the Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Maine at Farmington, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant by the United States Department of State and the J.     FARMINGTON, ME (May 29, 2008)--The University of Maine at Farmington College Republicans Club--a student organization dedicated to raising awareness of conservative viewpoints, campaigns and projects--was recently named Maine College Republican Chapter of the Year at the statewide organization's annual convention held at the Sable Oaks Marriott in South Portland. The award, presented by State Chairman Nathaniel Walton, was given to the club for the second time in three years for their strong grassroots efforts and display of activism on the UMF campus. (more)
  • University of Maine at Farmington Student Honored with Harvey Aft Award for Excellence in Chemistry
    FARMINGTON, ME (May 19, 2008)--The University of Maine at Farmington's 2008 Harvey Aft Award for Excellence in Chemistry was recently awarded to UMF junior Christopher Durkin, a biology major from Brunswick. Durkin received the honor and a monetary award totaling $2,900 at the University's Michael D. Wilson Symposium this spring at which he and his fellow student co-author presented their research project on pasteurization resistance in E. coli. (more)

  • University of Maine at Farmington Dining Services Leads the Way in Recycling for Bio-fuel Production
    FARMINGTON, ME (May 9, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington Dining Services has recently joined with Green Bean Bio-Fuel, a Vassalboro-based biodiesel production company, to lead the way among ARAMARK services nationwide in recycling waste cooking oil for bio-fuel production. Through the efforts of Chris Kinney, director of the University's food services, Green Bean Bio-Fuel will collect UMF's waste cooking oil to produce the more environmentally friendly fuel that can be purchased by local businesses and schools to help with their energy costs and assist in reducing greenhouse gases.   • University of Maine at Farmington Student Awarded Prestigious Geological Society of Maine Award
    FARMINGTON, ME (May 6, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington student Monica Hall, of Oakland, was recently awarded the Walter A. Anderson Award by the Geological Society of Maine for the best senior research project poster presentation at their spring meeting, April 13 at Bowdoin College. The Walter A. Anderson Fund was founded in 1995 in recognition of Walter A. Anderson, former Director of the Maine Geological Survey and currently state geologist emeritus. (more)

    FARMINGTON, ME (April 30, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington Director of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation Julie Davis, after having just completed a national search, is pleased to announce that Marc Meyers has accepted the University's offer to serve as the UMF sports information director. Meyers, who previously served as interim director, came to the university from The Times Record, a mid-coast Maine newspaper where he served as an assistant sports editor for over four years, covering local high school sports and Bowdoin College athletics.   • University of Maine at Farmington Student is Awarded Inaugural Joan McDade Geology Field Study Fund Scholarship
    FARMINGTON (April 11, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington sophomore geology major Anthony Greenlaw has recently been awarded the inaugural Joan McDade Geology Field Study Fund scholarship. This award will help support his participation in Geology of Newfoundland, a UMF May Term course taught by Tom Eastler, professor of geology, and Doug Reusch, assistant professor of geology, where students have the opportunity to gain field assistant experience at diverse locations while conducting geological mapping, studying natural geologic terrane and culture, and gaining an appreciation for the natural world.   • University of Maine at Farmington Announces Dean's List for the Fall 2007 Semester
    FARMINGTON, MAINE (February 26, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington has announced its Dean's List for the Fall 2007 semester. UMF maintains a Dean's List each semester for those students completing a minimum of 12 credits in courses producing quality points. A student whose grade point average for the semester equals or exceeds 3.8 will be listed with high academic achievement. A student whose grade point average for the semester is less than 3.8 but equal to or greater than 3.5 will be listed with academic achievement. Any incompletes must be satisfactorily completed before the student is honored with Dean's List status. Academic achievement awarded at commencement is based on all course work taken at UMF. (more)

  • University of Maine at Farmington Students Inducted Into First-Ever First Year Student National Honor Society
    FARMINGTON, MAINE (October 24, 2007)-- Twenty-eight University of Maine at Farmington students were recently inducted into UMF's inaugural chapter of the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for First Year Students, by ALD national office representative Lisa Ruch, at the organization's installation on Sunday, Oct. 14, at North Dining Hall in UMF's Olsen Student Center.     FARMINGTON, MAINE (October 15, 2007)--University of Maine at Farmington 2007 magna cum laude graduate Jenna Morency, of Brunswick, has been awarded a Fulbright Full Grant to conduct historical research at Australia's University of Tasmania and the Archives Office of Tasmania from February to November 2008. Morency, who is currently earning her master's in history at University of Maine, will be researching the plight of U.S. citizens imprisoned by British forces at a Tasmanian penal colony in 1839 for participating in the Canadian Rebellion. Her research began with her senior capstone research project at UMF advised by Associate Professor of History Ken Orosz, himself a Fulbright honoree. (more)

  • University of Maine at Farmington to Add Three Varsity Sports
    FARMINGTON, MAINE (April 17, 2007)--The University of Maine at Farmington will add three sports to its intercollegiate athletics program announced Director of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation Julie Davis. UMF will add women's lacrosse, men's volleyball and women's golf, increasing the total number of varsity sports to 14. The women's golf program will begin competition this coming fall, while women's lacrosse and men's volleyball will reach varsity status in 2009-2010. "We are very excited about expanding our co-curricular program to create more opportunities for students to participate in our varsity athletics programs. These sports in particular, add breadth, diversity and seasonal balance to our sport seasons and are the perfect complement to our growing club sport, recreation and fitness programs," said Davis. "This coincides with our campus strategic plan and mission as a residential public liberal arts college as well as recent NCAA legislation, which requires us to expand the number of sports that we offer. Our goal is to not only meet the requirements but to have a broad-based athletic program which is consistent with Division III core values." Women's lacrosse, which is already active on campus as a club sport, and men's volleyball, both spring sports, will be part of a two-year implementation plan. Cynthia Pratt, who currently coaches the UMF field hockey team, will serve as head coach of the women's lacrosse program, while the men's volleyball coach will be announced at a later date. The women's golf team will begin forming this coming fall, joining with the men's team to create a co-educational program under current men's coach Bob Timmons. (more)

    FARMINGTON, MAINE (March 16, 2007) -- University of Maine at Farmington has announced its Dean's List for the Fall 2006 semester. UMF maintains a Dean's List each semester for those students completing a minimum of 12 credits in courses producing quality points. A student whose grade point average equals or exceeds 3.8 will be listed with high academic achievement. A student whose grade point average for the semester is less than 3.8 but equal to or greater than 3.5 will be listed with academic achievement. Any incompletes must be satisfactorily completed before the student is honored with Dean's List status. Academic achievement awarded at commencement is based on all course work taken at UMF. (more)

    FARMINGTON, MAINE (November 28, 2006)--University of Maine at Farmington's Christopher Magri, associate professor of physics, is part of a 16-member international team of observational and dynamical astronomers led by Steven Ostro, astronomer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; and Daniel Scheeres, associate professor of aerospace engineering, the University of Michigan.     FARMINGTON, MAINE (July 17, 2006)--Katie Herbine, who is entering her second season as the University of Maine at Farmington's head women's cross country coach and who led the Beavers to the NAC Championship last year, recently succeeded in a competition of her own--the Ford Ironman Coeur d'Alene Triathlon held in Idaho. Herbine was the only woman from Maine to compete in the event and, despite the challenge of 98-degree weather, placed 34th in the Women Aged 25-29 Division, attaining the greatest athletic achievement of her life.     FARMINGTON, MAINE (March 3, 2006)--The University of Maine at Farmington boasts a new environmentally-friendly residence hall named for the late UMF alumna Frances Allen Black, class of 1933. A celebratory ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 15, in the building's lobby. Frances Allen Black bequeathed $1.4 million to the university to endow the E. Irene Allen (class of 1928) and Frances Allen Black Scholarship Fund which awards more than $70,000 a year to out-of-state students. (more)

  • UMaine Farmington Staff Member Receives Maine Maritime Academy Recognition for Katrina Relief
    FARMINGTON, MAINE (January 31, 2006) -- UMaine Farmington's Computer Specialist, John Rainville, recently received a certificate of appreciation from the Maine Maritime Academy as a member of the crew of the Training Ship State of Maine. A ceremony was held at the request of Acting Maritime Administrator John Jamian, to properly honor the crew of the TSSOM in aiding relief efforts following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The TSSOM provided emergency housing for relief workers in the New Orleans area and served more than 35,000 meals to guests during its 57-day tour of service. (more)

The Remnant Trust's collection, which appeared in New England for the first time, includes a circa-1300s manuscript of the Magna Carta, a first-edition of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, and a first-edition of Ralph Waldo Emerson's essays which includes "Self-Reliance."
