The Arts
Creativity is at the core of ALL our programs in The Arts. And creativity simply cannot be learned in a
lecture hall environment. It must be experienced, hands-on, guided by talented, seasoned artists and
innovators who know how to help students find and develop their own creative voice.
At Farmington we challenge students to look beyond the traditional categories of art, music, theater and creative writing as they engage with the changing role of The Arts in the 21st Century.
Here, students create guerrilla art and performance art to explore political and social ideas; compose music for electric guitar, laptop, and string quartet; write and direct their own provocative plays; and give public readings of their own poetry and fiction. Farmington students create work that cuts across cultural boundaries and academic areas. They open a gallery in Second Life; improvise work for instrumentalists, dancers and actors; create animations about the economy; spring a theatrical "happening" on campus; and collaborate with other musicians, artists and actors to create a short film.
Our classes in The Arts are based on a concept-driven education and include courses such as Digital Animation, Fundamentals of Acting, Electro-Acoustic Music, Improvising Music, Contemporary Japanese Film, much more — all based on Farmington's overarching philosophy of learning-by-doing.
The Arts at Farmington encompass the studio arts (new media, painting, and sculpture); art history, theory and criticism; music (composition, philosophy of music, performance); and theater (acting, directing, playwriting, and technical theater). Here, The Arts embraces Creative Writing. (Of course we treat writing as an art!) Creative Writing majors at Farmington study poetry, novel writing, short fiction, writing for the stage and screen, journalism, magazine writing, literature for children and young adults, and nonfiction — also with a true hands-on approach.
The Arts at Farmington also includes the business side of art: interdisciplinary Arts Administration. Our interdisciplinary Arts Administration major offers three different concentrations, each with a focus in a particular segment of the arts: Arts Administration: Art / Art History, Arts Administration: Music, Arts Administration: Theater. These concentrations combine your love of art, music, or theater with a solid understanding of skills in business; preparing you for the management side of the arts and entertainment world.
Here, students can also combine academic disciplines and areas to form a "unique-as-you-are" Individualized major. For years, students at Farmington have chosen the path less taken and have tailored their own majors in all sorts of creative ways. The possibilities are as wide and varied as your curiosity and imagination: Art and Sociology, Theater and English, Music and Writing, and more.
