Because no medical school requires its students to have a bachelor's degree in a specific major, almost any undergraduate major you choose at Farmington will allow you entrance into some of the finest medical schools in the nation.
The key — selecting and completing the right courses while you're earning your bachelor's degree. Farmington has the background and successful track record to know just what coursework the top medical schools look for.
Generally, medical schools require a strong foundation in the sciences: biology, physics, chemistry and organic chemistry with lab. In addition, coursework in advanced mathematics (statistics and calculus) is often recommended.
All of these foundation and upper-level courses are offered at Farmington.
It Takes Teamwork and Inspiration
In addition, our special Pre-Med faculty advising team within our Natural Sciences department
will work with you to tailor your course selections to meet the specific academic demands of
medical schools. They take the time and interest to understand your goals and help you discover
what your inclinations are. Then they work with you to really explore your opportunities,
to give you valuable experience, prepare you for the MCATS and the medical school application process,
and to expose you to the medical specialty of your choosing — providing you all the tools
necessary to get you into medical school.
It's an academic track specially designed as an apprenticeship for medical school.
Your Farmington Pre-Med advising team will hold periodic gatherings for all Pre-Med students (students from a variety of UMF majors). Some of these meetings focus on the specialties in each of the medical fields and feature guest speakers.
In fall 2007 Rebecca Lamey, V.P. for Human Resources at MaineGeneral Health Systems met with
Farmington Pre-Med students to give an overview of health career options and needs in Maine and
talk about MaineGeneral's medical technician program. And Dr. Amy Davidoff from the University
of New England came to talk about the interview process for medical school and UNE's Physician
Assistant program.
Going the Extra Mile — A Farmington Hallmark
Your Farmington Pre-Med advisors truly go the extra mile — coordinating off-campus field
trips, connecting students with Farmington alumni who work in medical fields, and assisting with
internships (Farmington even has an endowed paid internship at the world famous Jackson Laboratory
in Bar Harbor, Maine).
They also collaborate with the Finance Authority of Maine, which works with specific medical
schools to reserve seats especially for Maine residents: the University of Vermont College of
Medicine, the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dartmouth Medical School;
veterinary schools: The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University; and dental
schools: Dalhousie University School of Dentistry in Nova Scotia.
